If you've just undergone a radio-frequency (RF) micro-needling treatment, you may be wondering what to expect. Will there be any pain or swelling? How long will it take for the skin to heal? In this blog post, we will answer all your questions and provide a detailed guide on caring for your skin after treatment.
After your RF micro-needling treatment, it is normal to experience some redness and swelling. This is perfectly normal and will typically subside within a few hours to a couple of days. However, if you experience any pain or discomfort, contact your aesthetic practitioner or a dermatologist.
Sun protection is critical. Avoid exposing your skin to the sun immediately after treatment. Also, wear sunscreen daily for at least 2 weeks after the RF micro-needling treatment. If you must go outside, be sure to wear broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Additional protection such as reapplying your sunscreen, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and seeking shade when possible is also highly recommended.
Within the first few days after your RF micro-needling treatment, you may notice that your skin is red, sore, blotchy, dry, and flaky. Some tiny needle scabs might be visible too. This is normal and should go away independently provided the right aftercare is followed. It's also important to avoid picking at your skin or scrubbing it too vigorously as it can cause irritation and lead to complications. After about ten to fourteen days, your skin should be healed and you can resume your normal skincare routine. To help alleviate the irritation and the skin repair process after the treatment, we recommend the daily use of a gentle soap-free cleanser, an EGF repair serum (with epidermal growth factor), followed by very high sun protection. We also recommend using the EGF Repair Facial Mask twice weekly to soothe the skin further and stimulate cell renewal.
You should avoid also the use of any exfoliating treatments including products containing AHA/BHA or any other exfoliating agents such as facial brushes as your skin will be more sensitive.
You should also avoid using products containing retinoids including retinol for at least 2 weeks after the rf micro-needling treatment as your skin will be more sensitive.
You should also avoid any heat treatments and strenuous activities such as hot showers, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds, heavy gym workouts, running, all-night dancing, etc. for at least 3 days following the treatment.
Avoid make-up for the first 24 to 72 hours. When you do start wearing makeup again, be sure to use non-comedogenic products and avoid any makeup that could irritate your skin or clog pores. If you must, use a clean cotton swab or clean hands to apply makeup around the treatment area. Avoid using new skincare products right after the treatment as your skin will be more sensitive.
You should also drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in antioxidants including lots of fruit and veggies to help support your skin as it goes through the healing process.
If you have any questions or concerns about caring for your skin after rf micro-needling, be sure to contact your aesthetic practitioner or a dermatologist.
