How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

Updated: May 17, 2022

Are you considering laser hair removal? If so, there are a few things you need to do before your appointment. This blog post will discuss the best ways to prepare for laser hair removal. We will also provide some tips on how to get the most out of your treatment!

Before laser hair removal, the first thing you need to do is avoid sun exposure. This means that you should not go out in the sun for at least two weeks before your treatment. If you must go out in the sun, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

It is also important to avoid waxing, plucking, or electrolysis for at least six weeks before laser hair removal. These methods can irritate the skin and make it more difficult for the laser to target the hair follicles.

It is recommended that you avoid self-tanning lotions for at least four weeks before laser hair removal. Self-tanning lotions often contain ingredients that change the colour of the skin, and the action of the laser treatment could potentially be intensified by the pigment in the skin and possibly lead to pigmentation or even burning.

If you are taking any medications that can make your skin sensitive to light, you will need to stop taking them for at least two weeks before laser hair removal. This includes medications such as Accutane, retinoids, and certain antibiotics.

You should also shave the treatment area before your appointment. This will help the laser to target the hair follicles more effectively. Be sure to shave with a clean razor and avoid using any creams or lotions afterwards.

Avoid deodorants at least 24 hours prior to the treatment and on the day of the treatment. Deodorants often contain aluminium chloride, which can cause skin irritation.

Arrive at your appointment with clean skin. You should avoid wearing makeup, lotions, or oils on the treatment area.

Avoid chlorinated pools, heavy workouts, hot showers, and any other heat treatments (saunas, sunbeds, steam rooms, hot showers) at least 24 hours before the laser hair removal treatment as they can cause skin irritation.

Avoid using exfoliants (AHA, BHA, physical exfoliants like exfoliating gloves, brushes, and products with exfoliating beads etc.) to the treatment area for at least two weeks before laser hair removal. Exfoliating the skin can make it more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation and more side effects.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. You should avoid wearing tight clothing that might rub against the treatment area and cause irritation.

If you have any questions or concerns about laser hair removal, be sure to talk to your laser and aesthetic practitioner.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that you get the most out of your laser hair removal treatment!
