A Guide to RADIOFREQUENCY (RF) MICRO-NEEDLING

Updated: Oct 23, 2022

If you're looking for a new way to improve the appearance of your skin, you may want to consider radiofrequency micro-needling. This is a relatively new procedure that has been gaining in popularity in recent years. But what is it, and how can it help you achieve the beautiful skin you desire?

Radiofrequency micro-needling is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses needles in combination with fractional radiofrequency energy.

The treatment involves insulated gold-plated microneedles that penetrate into the skin at a certain depth and deliver a radiofrequency impulse into the targeted area. This way of delivering radiofrequency gives off more uniform heating of the deeper skin layers thus causing collagen contraction. It also helps to stimulate the body's own production of collagen and elastin over the next few months, resulting in long-term skin tightening and rejuvenation.

What are the benefits of radiofrequency micro-needling?

There are many benefits to radiofrequency micro-needling, including the following:

  • Immediate and long-term skin tightening and wrinkle reduction

  • Stimulation of new collagen production

  • Improvement in skin texture and tone

  • Reduction in pore size

  • Improvement in acne scars and other types of scarring

  • Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles

  • Improvement in overall skin health

Is radiofrequency micro-needling safe?

Yes, radiofrequency micro needling is considered a very safe cosmetic procedure and is suitable for all skin types. It can be performed quickly with minimum downtime. There is minimal risk of side effects or complications, and the procedure is well-tolerated by most people.

Suitable for all skin types and colours

Is radiofrequency micro-needling right for you?

If you are looking for a minimally-invasive way to improve the appearance of your skin and are in good general health, radiofrequency micro-needling may be right for you. This procedure can provide immediate and long-term results, with minimal risk of side effects.

However, you should avoid radiofrequency if you:

  • currently or recently used oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane)

  • have an active cold sore breakout

  • have a skin infection

  • have an active skin condition (like eczema or dermatitis)

  • are currently using topical retinoids

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • are taking anticoagulants (medications that can thin the blood)

  • have a pacemaker or other implanted medical devices

  • have a history of keloids, hypertrophic scarring, or poor wound healing

  • have a history of skin cancer or other types of cancer and are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy

How is radiofrequency micro needling performed?

Radiofrequency micro-needling is usually performed in a medical spa or skincare clinic.

The treatment area will be cleansed and numbing cream may be applied for 30 minutes to minimize discomfort. The micro-needling process usually takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the pain threshold of the client.

Immediately after the procedure, the face is warm, red and swollen. After around 4 days the needle marks will disappear, and your face will start to feel tighter and more lifted.

The full effect of the procedure will be visible after 2-3 months.

What are the side effects of radiofrequency micro-needling?

The most common side effects of radiofrequency micro-needling are temporary and include:

Redness and swelling

Bruising and tenderness

Dryness and flaking

After the procedure, you may experience some redness and swelling, which should resolve within a few hours to a couple of days. You may also see some slight bruising, which will fade over the next few days. It is important to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen for the first week following the procedure.

How many treatments will I need?

RF microneedling results are typically seen within a few weeks, with continued improvement over the next few months. Most people will need 2-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
